I just finished watching the second installment of the Ken Burns film, The National Parks and I must say I have been really taken by it.  I have especially enjoyed learning about John Muir, who founded the Sierra Club back in 1892, and was a big proponent in the National Parks movement (he was responsible for turning Yosemite into a National Park among others).
John Muir advocated conservation before it was chic and cool and he truly believed in the divine aspects of the natural world—when he was among nature he felt immortal.  If you can, you should check out this film on PBS, it really does expose some of the most astounding natural places in this country and reminds you of the best aspects of America.
